P90X – Day 29 – Chest, Shoulders & Triceps
Today was the first day of Week 5. Week 5 brings with it a totally new workout DVD titled “Chest, Shoulders & Triceps”. I personally think it should be called “Pushups, Pushups, and More Pushups”.
Ok it wasn’t all push-ups, but there definitely was a lot of different varieties of exercises that were similar to push-ups, attacking the chest and triceps from every angle possible.
I also love how they put an older lady on this DVD (I’m not sure how old she is but maybe late 40’s? 50’s? Who knows.) and at one point we were doing One Handed Push-Ups and she was able to do them (on her knees) but I was so wiped that I couldn’t even do one.
It’s kind of like your Mom being able to do a one handed push-up and you can’t, heheh. They purposely put these people on the DVD’s to make you push hard. On the Plyometrics DVD (jump training), they have a one-legged guy with a prosthetic leg doing the workout. What kind of excuse can you possibly have not to be able to do a workout when there is a guy with ONE LEG doing it just fine!
What I’ve clearly learned from doing this P90X program is that all my previous workout experience, of doing the typical exercises we all do (bench press, bicep curls, squats etc.) has been completely useless. Because I wasn’t doing full body training like I do on the P90X system, a lot of muscle groups in my body were completely missed and ignored.
What this means is that I am pretty strong with certain motions, but really weak with others, depending on which muscle group it uses. This is not a balanced approach to working out. I’m so glad I found this program.
Food
Food wise I still haven’t gone to the store to get all the stuff I need for Phase II of the program. Time restrictions have made it difficult but hopefully I get it all sorted out tomorrow or the day after.
For breakfast, my lovely wife was super nice and prepared this Oatmeal with Raisins and a bit of Cinnamon, and half of a Grapefruit. This is the first I’ve had plain old Oatmeal. Normally I’ve been eating instant Oatmeal which has sugar added to it as well as apples or blueberries and stuff. I definitely noticed a difference in taste between the instant Oatmeal and this stuff. At first I kind of didn’t like it, but after a few spoonfuls it grew on me. Especially with those raisins in there, it actually tasted really good.
Lunch
I didn’t have the stuff to make my lunch on the P90X plan and was in a hurry as well, so we ended up just making beans and wieners with toast. I know, the wieners weren’t very healthy but this is what happens when you don’t have what you need in the fridge and you go rummaging through the kitchen cupboards trying to figure out something to eat.

For dinner we were out at a meeting tonight with my wife so we didn’t have time to cook dinner and ended up going out to White Spot. I had a Mushroom Chicken Burger with Fries, Salad and Zucchini Sticks. It definitely wasn’t as healthy as what I could have cooked at home but at least I tried with those Zucchini sticks. Actually… I think they are deep fried, so never mind – I ate a crap dinner tonight.
Tomorrow is Day 30. I can’t fricken believe how quickly the last 30 days have gone by. As of tomorrow I’ll be 1/3 of the way through this program. That’s crazy! I’m very excited. Anyone want to see updated pictures? Or should I wait until Day 90?

I thought your assessment was very funny. Today is going to be my first day with the Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps and I am quite nervous. I will however modify and do what I can if I can’t do all of the push-ups. Can you describe how you would do a push-up? I would like to see your results pictures also.
